Assessment at Westwood

 

The principles that underpin our assessment system are:

• Every child can achieve
• The National Curriculum objectives will be used as the expectations for all children
• Children will work towards age related expectations, deepening their knowledge and understanding of content rather than be extended into higher year group objectives.  This avoids superficial learning and improves long term understanding.
• Teachers use on-going formative assessment to ensure the correct scaffolding is built into lessons to ensure all children can achieve.

 

At the end of KS1 and KS2, children will sit externally marked tests.  These tests will report a grade of Working at the Expected Standard or Working towards the expected standard.  Scores will also be reported using a ‘Scaled score’ system instead of reporting a ‘level’ as in previous years.

 

When making judgements about children’s attainment, Westwood will use the following terminology:

 

• At Expected Standard (EXS)
• Greater Depth (GDS)
• Working Towards Expected Standard (WTS) 
• Below National Standard (BLW) (children who are working well below the age-related expectations)

 

Below you will find ‘End of Year Expectation’ documents for each of the years.  These are objectives that the children will be working on for their particular year.

 

          

SEND provision

 

Children working significantly below age related expectations will continue to receive targeted support to ensure they make good progress.  This may mean that children are working on earlier years objectives until they are secure. 

 

 

More able children

 

Rather than moving onto the next year’s curriculum, these children will work on deepening their knowledge and understanding through application of skills in different contexts. See supporting document here.

 

 

Summative Assessment

 

All year groups will continue to do termly tests.  Scores from these tests, together with the on-going formative assessment will allow teachers to track attainment and progress over the term.  These tests will also inform planning for the following term.

As mentioned above, years 2 and years 6 will continue to sit an externally marked test at the end of the Summer term.  Scores will be reported to parents.  More information on this will follow nearer the time.

 

 

 

Reporting Progress

 

Pupil/Teacher meetings – during the year, teachers will meet with children to discuss their learning.  They will look at the positive achievements made so far and discuss priority areas for development. 

 

Parent Consultation Evenings – this gives teachers a chance to inform parents of the progress of children.  Parents have the opportunity to look at the work the children have done and ask any questions or voice concerns that they have.

 

End of year Report – we will continue to report on a yearly basis.  Reports will give parents the opportunity to receive more formal notification of achievements over the year.  They will also cover behaviour for learning and social interactions.
